1. Find the coordinates of the image of each of the following points under the reflection in the line y = 0.

Ans. The image of a point (x, y) under the reflection of X-axis is p’ (x, – y),

i. e. only the sign of y-coordinate will be changed.

(i) (3, – 6)

Ans. (3, 6)

(ii) (1, – 2)

Ans. (1, 2)

(iii) (– 3, –1)

Ans.  (– 3, 1)

(iv) (0, – 2)

Ans. (0, 2)

(v) (3, 0)

2. Find the reflection of the following points in the line x = 0

Ans. The line x = 0 meansY-axis, i.e. reflection of points is to found in Y-axis

(i) (– 2.5, 3.5)

Ans. The reflection of the point ( – 2.5, 3.5) in the line x = 0 is (2.5, 3.5).

(ii) (0, 7)

Ans. The reflection of the point (0,7) in the line x = 0 is (0,7)

(iii) (3, – 1.5)

Ans. The reflection of the point (3, – 1.5) in the line x = 0 is (3, – 1.5).

3. Find the coordinates of the image of each of the following points under the reflection in the origin.

Ans. The image of a point P(x, y) under the reflection of origin is P’ (– x,y) i.e. the sign of both coordinates will be changed.

(i) (2, – 5)

Ans. (– 2, 5)

(ii) (0, – 1)

Ans. (0,1)

(iii) (0, 0)

Ans. (0, 0)

(iv) (7, 8)

Ans. (– 7, – 8)

4. A point P (h, k) is reflected in X-axis to P’ (2, – 3), write down the values of h and k. P’ is the image of P, when reflected in the Y-axis. Write down the coordinates of P”. Find the coordinates of P”, when P is reflected in the origin.

Ans. Let us take 10 small division = 1 unit both by plotting p’(2, – 3) and point P(h, k) is reflected in X-axis point h = 2 and k = – (–3) = 3

6. The point P(a, b) is invariant, when the reflected in the origin. Find the values of a and b.

Ans. The image of point P in the origin is P’ (– a, – b).

Now, as P is invariant

7. Points P and Q have coordinates (2, 5) and (0, 3). Find

(i) the image P’ of P under the reflection in the X-axis.

(ii) the image Q’ of Q under the reflection in the line PP’.

Ans. (i) Point P(2, 5) under the reflection of X-axis (2, – 5)

(ii) The image of a point Q(0, 3) under the reflection of line PP’ is Q’ (4, 3).

8. Use a graph paper to answer the following questions. (take 1 cm = 1 unit on both axes)

(i) Plot A(4, 4), B(4, – 6) and C(8, 0), the vertices of a

ABC.

(ii) Reflect ABC on the Y-axis and name it as A’ B’C’.

(iii) Write the coordinates of the images A’, B’ and C”.

(iv) Give a geometrical name for the figure AA’C’ B’ BC.

Ans. (i) Let us take 10 small division = 1 unit on both the axes.

By plotting A(4, 4), B(4 , – 6) and C(8, 0) on the graph paper.

(ii) To obtain the reflection on point A in the origin, such that OA’ = OA. Similarly, we find the reflection of vertices B, C and in the origin. The co-ordinates of A’, B’ and C’ are (– 4, 4), (– 4, – 6) and (– 8, 0), respectively.

(iv) Hexagon geometrical name for the figure AA’C’B’ BC.

9. Using graph paper and taking 1 cm = 1 unit along with X-axis and Y-axis.

(i)  Plot the point A(–4, 4) and B(2, 2).

(ii) Reflect A and B in the origin to get the images A’ and B’, respectively.

(iii) Write down the coordinates of A’ and B’.

(iv) Give the geometrical name for the figure ABA’ B’.

(ii) To obtain the reflection of point A in the origin, such that OA’ = OA, similarly we find reflection of vertices B. The coordinates of A’ and B’ are (–4, 4), and (–2, –2).

(iii) The coordinates of A’(4, – 4) and B’(–2, –2).

(iv) We find that the quadrilateral ABA’B’ is a rhombus.

10. Use graph paper for this question.

(take 2 cm = 1 unit along both X and Y-axes) ABCD is a quadrilateral whose vertices are A(2, 2), B (2, –2), C (0, –1), and D(0, 1).

(i) Reflect quadrilateral ABCD on the Y-axis and name it as A’B’CD.

(ii) Write down the coordinates of A’ and B’.

(iii) Name two points which are invariant under the above reflection.

(iv) Name the polygon A’B’CD.

11. Use graph paper for this question. (take 2 cm = 1 unit along both X and Y-axes). Plot the points O(0, 0), A(–4, 4), B(–3, 0) and C(0, –3)

(i) Reflect points A and B on the Y-axis and name them A’ and B’, respectively. Write down their coordinates.

(ii) Name the figure OABCB’A’.

Ans. We can plot the given points on the graph paper as follows.

(i) When points A(– 4, 4) and B(– 3, 0) are reflected in Y-axis. Then, the image of points A(– 4, 4) and B(– 3, 0), respectively.

(ii) OABCB’ is a hexagon. 

12. Using graph paper to answer the following questions. (take 2 cm = 1 unit on both axes)

(i) Plot the points A(–4, 2) and B(2, 4).

(ii) A’ is the image of A, when reflected in the Y-axis. Plot it on the graph paper and write the coordinates of A’.

(iii) B’ is the image of B, when reflected in the line AA’. Write the coordinates of B’.

(iv) Write the geometric name of the figure ABA’ B’.

Ans. (i)Let us take 10 small division = 1 unit on both the axes. We can plot the given point on the graph paper as follows

13. Use a graph paper for this question. (take 2 cm = 1 unit on both X and Y-axes)

(i) Plot the following points. A(0, 4), B(2, 3), C(1, 1) and D(2, 0)

(ii) Reflect points B, C, D in the Y-axis and write down their coordinates.

Name the images as B’, C’ and D’, respectively.

Ans. (i) We can plot the points A(0, 4), B(2, 3), C(1, 1) and D(2, 0) on graph paper as follows

(ii)We know that the image of point (x, y) on Y-axis has the coordinates (– x, y).

Image of B(2, 3) on Y-axis has the coordinates B’ (– 2, 3).

Image of D(2, 0) on Y-axis has the coordinates D’ (– 2, 0).

14. Use a graph paper for this question.

(taking 1 cm = 1 unit along both the X and Y-axes)

(i) Plot the points A (0, 5), B (2, 5), C (5, 2), D (5, − 2), E (2 – 5) and F (0, – 5).

(ii) Reflect the points B, C, D and E on the Y-axis and name them respectively as B’, C’, D’ and E’.

(iii) Write the coordinates of B’, C’, D’ and E’.

(iv) Name the figure formed by BCDEE’D’C’B’.

Ans. Let us take 10 small division = 1 unit on both the axes.

We can plot the points A(0, 5), B(2, 5), C(5,2), D(5, – 2), E(2, – 5) and F(0, – 5) as follows.

(iv) We find that the BCDEE’D’C’B’ is octagon.

15. Using a graph paper, plot the points A(6, 4) and B(0, 4).

(i) Reflect A and B in the origin to get the images A’ and B’.

(ii) Write the coordinates of A’ and B’.

(iii) State the geometrical name for the figure ABA’ B’.

(iv) Find its perimeter.

Ans. Let us take 10 small division = 1 unit of both the axes.

We can plot the points A(6, 4) and B(0, 4) as follow.

(i) Reflect A and B in origin to get the image A’ and B’ in this graph.

(ii) The coordinates of A’ and B’ are (– 6, – 4) and (0, – 4).

(iii) We find that the geometrical name ABA’B’ is parallelogram.

(iv) Perimeter of a parallelogram ABA’B’

                                               = 2(AB + AB’) = 2(6 + 10)

                                               = 32 units
