Q3. What are the different ways in which infectious diseases can spread?

Ans. Different ways in which infectious diseases can spread are

(i) Through contact.

(ii) Through various agents like-bacteria, viruses etc.

(iii) Air.

(iv) Sexual intercourse

(v) Infected usage of things like-needles etc.

(vi) Unhygienic environment

Q4. Write very briefly about the following:

(a) B.C.G                              (b) Incubation period

(c) Triple vaccine              (d) Haemophilia

Ans. (a) B.C.G-Vaccination found useful in developing immunity for tuberculosis.

(b) Incubation period – Discussed in answer I (c) of this lesson.

(c) Triple vaccine-Also called D.PT, is a combined vaccine given by injections to young babies to protect them from three Diseases-diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough.

(d) Haemophilia – Hereditary disease in which the blood clots very slowly. In such persons even a minute cut may cause too much bleeding even sometimes leading to death.

Q5. What are the causes and symptoms of tetanus, poliomyelitis and tuberculosis? How can they be prevented?

Ans. Tetanus: Popularly called “lockjaw” caused by the tetanus bacterium clostridium tetani. The germ enters the body through deep wounds.

Prevention: Vaccination or giving anti-toxin.

Poliomyelitis: Popularly known as “polio” primarily a disease of children. In severe cases it causes paralysis of the legs. The virus is spread from nose, throat and also intestinal wastes.

Prevention: Salk’s vaccine developed from dead virus.

Tuberculosis:

Disease of the lungs caused by a small rod-shaped bacterium (Mycobacterium tuberculosis) and spread by sputum from infected persons.

 Prevention: B.C.G vaccination

Q16. Name the various microorganisms which cause communicable diseases. Give two examples each of the diseases caused by these microorganisms?

Ans. Communicable diseases: These are those diseases which pass from infected person to a healthy person through contact either directly or indirectly. These diseases which cause infections to the organisms are called infectious disease. These communicable diseases are caused by the following microorganisms.

1. Bacteria- These are microscopic organisms found everywhere and caused many diseases like diphtheria, cholera, whooping cough, tetanus, leprosy, food poisoning. Botulism is also a food poisoning. Bacteria get entry into the canned foods and release toxic substances which are harmful to the nerves. Unboiled milk can also be source of bacterial infection. So pasteurized milk should be used.

2. Viruses: These are very tiny organisms. These can only be under the electron microscope. These can only multiply when inside the cell. They can cause many diseases as chickenpox, rabies, polio, cold, influenza, measles, conjuctivitis, mumps, hepatitis, measles and conjunctivitis spread through contact.

3. Protozoa: These are one celled organisms and cause many diseases as amoebic dysentery, malaria, sleeping sickness. Malaria is caused by the bite of anopheles female mosquito and puts one celled plasmodia into the blood stream. These leave toxins in the blood and cause fever.

4. Fungi: These are non-green organisms. They may be single celled (Yeast) or multicellular as in Agarics, Fomes. They cause as well many skin diseases (Ring worm) and food poisoning (Botulism).

Q17. Explain the various ways through which communicable diseases spread?

Ans. Spread of Communicable diseases

I. Air borne infection: – Bacteria and viruses are very tiny one celled microscope organisms. These infect nasal passage, throat, wind pipes and lungs. Infected people when sneeze or cough at public places. They spray crores of bacteria and viruses in the air and the persons sitting to close to them catch the disease. So it spreads through it as in diphtheria, whooping cough. Cold influenza.

2. Water borne infections: Typhoid, dysentery, cholera are internal infections and spread through the intake of dirty, infected water. Swimming pools spread infections of throat, ear, nasal passages and skin.

3. Infections through the food: Intestinal infections spread through unwashed fruits, vegetables, food prepared by infected persons at the parties weddings may cause infections to so many persons. It may cause amoebic dysentery and diarrhoea. Bacteria can enter through the canned fruits and jams and spoil them and leave toxins in them. If taken then cause many intestinal diseases.

4. Infection through contact: – Many infections are carried by direct contact from person to person as athletes foot. It is a fungal disease which spreads through contact. Intestinal infections and many viral infections are in the family from one person to others. Conjuctivitis can pread through the contact to whole of the class.

Q18. What is botulism?

Ans. It is type of food poisoning. It takes place by taking spoiled canned food. The bacteria gets entry into the canned food, fruits or jams. Those bacteria multiply in the absence of air and leave toxic substances in the canned food which is harmful for the nervous system. It may cause diseases of the stomach as food poisoning. Dysentery
