Punjab during British Empire

First Anglo Sikh War

Causes:

Treaty of Lahore (09-03-1846)

Second Anglo Sikh War (1848 – 49)

Reasons

1. Discontentment among Sikhs due to dominant position of British.

2. British men killed cows.

3. Fear of annexation of Punjab and ill-treatment of Rani Jindan.

4. Interference in social customs due to social reforms (sati, female infanticide were opposed

and prohibited legally).

5. Sikh army irritated due to reduction in troops and salary. 6. Rani Jindan imprisoned at Shiekhpura and deported to Benaras. Her allowances decreased

from 48000 to 12000.

7. Matrimonial restrictions.

8. Revolt of Mulraj of Multan

• Difficulty in paying tribute of 20 lakhs to Lahore Durbar.

 • Mulraj resigned & Britishers sent new governor of Multan.

• Sepoys revolted and forced Mulraj to accept Leadership. It was stormed in 1849 with force from Bombay,

  • General Whish forced Mulraj to surrender

9. Revolt of Chattar Singh at Hazara:

  • Captain Abbot ill-treated Governor Chattar Singh of Hazara. Chattar Singh revolted & his son Sher Singh found him. They contacted Mulraj.
